What was your childhood like?
Well, I was born in Iran and we moved to Belgium and that’s where I spent my childhood. In between then and now, we moved to Indianapolis for about a year, then Montreal for 4 years, Toronto for 3 years, Winnipeg for the last 8 years, and now I’m back in Toronto.
I think at the beginning, I was actually pretty shy. Living in new places and meeting different people really took me out of my comfort zone. Since I was the new kid so many times, I think activities inside and outside of school, such as sports or clubs or volunteering in the community, helped me to come out of my shell. It was because of these experiences that I knew I loved being part of something bigger than myself, being part of the community. When I was thinking about what I wanted to do, it seemed natural to choose a path where I would be around people.
Are there any elements of your childhood self that remain with you today?
Yes, as a child, little things would always make me very happy. Things like reading a great book or being outdoors. That definitely stays with me today. I’m not the type of person who needs to have something extraordinary happen to enjoy life. I still see the beauty in the small joys of life.
Among the things that make you happy, what makes you laugh the most?
My friends and family, one hundred percent. Even if we’re not out, but we’re just sitting at home watching TV or spending time together. I’m so comfortable with them and little things they say or do will always make me laugh.
What do you think that your friends and family appreciate the most about you?
I think what they appreciate the most about me is that I am always myself around them. People close to me know that I can be funny, but I’m also very loyal and sincere. I think they just appreciate the fact that I’m never trying to be anybody else but me. They also know that I value friendship and family a lot, so they can always count on me and I’ll be there for them.
Do you have any nicknames?
Yes, my friends call me “Kimz” or “Kimi”. But, I also love to cook so they call me the “Meal Prep Queen” because I have a fridge packed with elaborate meals, all in a bunch of Ziploc containers.
What’s your favorite meal?
Everyone always sees me eating this: it’s a tofu quinoa bowl. I’ll marinate the tofu in a spicy sriracha sauce, cook quinoa, put cilantro in it, and make a homemade corn salsa. I’ll put that on top, mix it up, and add chunks of avocado. It tastes so good and it’s healthy for you!
